Municipality of Montevideo: how GoDoWorks made sidewalk inspections more efficient

The City launched the ABC Sidewalks Plan, aimed at repairing sidewalks on a large scale, since public space is understood as a cornerstone of the right to the city.

The plan follows four strategic lines: public space; commitment; ABC financing; proximity and information.

Residents who want to take part in the plan can do so through a web form or by phone.

The challenge: surveying the condition of Montevideo's sidewalks and managing their repair

A survey plan was designed by municipality and neighborhood and built on the GDW solution. Using the mobile app, inspectors check the condition of sidewalks and notify the resident whenever something is out of order.

Through the citizen portal, the resident can see the photos and the City's report, and either repair the sidewalk themselves within the notified deadline or ask the City to carry out the repair using the financing options available.

Needs identified:

  • Create a centralized workflow for inspecting and repairing sidewalks.
  • Provide tools that give residents transparency throughout the process.

Our solution makes it possible to survey the condition of sidewalks along with their geolocation, digitizing the information and generating service requests and tracking of their status.

The solution: deploying GDW  Inspections as the digital management platform for surveying more than 5,000 sidewalk inspections and more than 4,000 repairs.

GDW Inspections created efficient  recording and follow-up processes, thanks to systematization and digitization that did not exist before.

By eliminating paper records, and the rework that comes with them,  the administrative processes for obtaining and managing field information are simplified.

At the same time, that data becomes far more available  to management and supervision.

The client's view is key. MBA Arch. Adriana Gorga Moreira, Director of Urban Development, describes her experience with the GDW solution and the milestones reached after implementing GDW Inspections:

We increased inspector productivity. We broadened the geo-referenced visibility of sidewalk conditions by municipality. We identified the average time to resolution. We were able to measure the level of response to the plan.

With GDW Inspections, the Municipality of Montevideo was able to capture key performance indicators to improve its productivity. Among the indicators obtained: geographic distribution of faults by municipality, square meters to repair and repaired, volume of inspections carried out, faults under inspection, activity per inspector and average time to resolution, among others.

Benefits achieved with  GDW Inspections

Improved, centralized, real-time capacity to manage sidewalk inspection and repair.

Through digitization, actions in  the field automatically become  online information in real time.

A simpler, more  efficient process for obtaining information.

That means major savings in  time, resources and administrative work, which directly cuts  operating costs considerably and produces clear benefits for the public.

Digitizing inspectors' mobility improves their coordination and provides assurance across  the processes deployed.

Sidewalk inspections can now be recorded without difficulty, producing better, more efficient  inspection processes.
