Routing
Routing is the decision of in what order and by which path the stops of a shift are visited. It takes into account distances, traffic, time windows, vehicle capacity and the priority of each stop, and its output is the day itinerary.
Optimising it is not only about saving fuel: every minute taken out of travel is a minute returned to productive work. In dispersed operations, the itinerary explains more of the cost per service than the duration of the task itself.
Good routing has to be able to be redone during the day. The morning plan stops being valid with the first emergency, and a system that only plans at the start leaves the dispatcher solving it by hand exactly when the pressure is highest.
