Dispatching
Dispatching is the decision of who each work order is assigned to and when. It crosses four things: the technical skill required, each person actual availability, the distance to the site and the deadline committed to the customer.
Done by hand, dispatching is the task that most limits the growth of an operation: someone looks at a spreadsheet, makes phone calls and hands out the day work. It works up to a few dozen orders a day; beyond that the decisions stop being good because there is no time to compare them.
Assisted dispatching proposes the assignment and leaves the final word to the planner. That matters: the system knows the distance and the workload, but it does not know that a customer specifically asked for one technician or that a site closed early.
