Indicator dashboard
An indicator dashboard is the view that summarises how the operation is doing: compliance, productivity, costs and alerts, updated with what gets recorded in the field. Its purpose is to make a decision possible without having to request a report.
The difference between a useful dashboard and a decorative one is whether it leads to an action. A number with no comparison — against the target, against the previous period, against another zone — informs but does not enable a decision, and it ends up being a screen nobody looks at.
Its value depends on the freshness of the data. A dashboard that updates at month-end describes history; one fed by what gets recorded on each visit lets you correct course while the period is still running.
It should also have an owner. A dashboard that everyone looks at and nobody reviews stops being updated conceptually: it keeps showing last year indicators long after the operation started being decided on different ones.
