Stockout
A stockout is the absence of a product at the point of sale when the shopper goes looking for it. It is not the same as having no inventory: there can be stock in the store back room and the product still be out of stock on the shelf.
It is a lost sale that also goes unrecorded: it appears in no report because it never happened. That is why it is only detected by going to look, and why in-visit auditing — with photos — is the only reliable data on how much is being lost.
Its cost does not end with the individual sale. A shopper who fails to find their brand twice in a row tries another one, and at that point the loss stops being one unit and becomes a customer.
