Preventive maintenance
Preventive maintenance is the scheduled intervention carried out before the equipment fails, on a fixed interval of time or usage. Its purpose is not to repair but to avoid the unplanned stoppage, which always costs more.
Scheduling it by calendar is the usual approach and tends to be the worse of the two options: a machine that ran two hundred hours and one that ran twenty get the same service on the same day. Scheduling it by actual usage — engine hours, kilometres, cycles — puts the effort where it is needed.
The indicator that tells you whether it is working is the ratio between preventive and corrective work. An operation with 80 % corrective does not have a preventive plan: it has a wish list and a crew putting out fires.
