Predictive maintenance
Predictive maintenance intervenes when the equipment data anticipates a failure, not when an interval expires. It relies on measurements — vibration, temperature, consumption, hours — and on the failure history of the same type of asset.
It is the step after preventive maintenance and not its replacement: preventive covers what degrades predictably, and predictive catches what degrades ahead of time. Applied without an orderly preventive plan behind it, it usually turns out to be an investment with nothing to rest on.
Its precondition is having history. Without a record of previous failures, of what was replaced and of the conditions the equipment was working under, there is nothing to predict from: analytics does not compensate for missing data, it needs it.
