Inspection
An inspection is the on-site verification that something meets a standard: a machine, an installation, a vehicle, a construction site or a store. It ends in a ruling — compliant, compliant with observations, or rejected — and in the evidence that backs it.
It differs from maintenance in that it does not intervene: it observes and rules. And it differs from an audit in scope: an inspection looks at a specific object, an audit looks at whether a whole process is being followed.
The bottleneck in an inspection operation is almost never inspecting: it is consolidating the report. When the ruling is assembled back at the office from handwritten notes, you lose the days that separate the observation from the corrective action.
When the ruling is issued on site, with the checklist already complete and the evidence attached, that delay disappears: the observation reaches whoever has to fix it the same day, which is while it can still be fixed.
