On-shelf availability
On-shelf availability is the percentage of times a product is actually available on the shelf when someone goes looking for it. It is abbreviated OSA and it is the positive measure of the same thing a stockout measures in negative.
It is measured by surveying in the store, not in the system: the retailer inventory may show stock while the product sits in the back room, badly placed or behind another brand. That gap between declared stock and visible stock is precisely what the indicator captures.
It is one of the most quoted indicators in retail because it has a direct, verifiable effect on sales: industry measurements put average availability well below what brands assume, and every point recovered translates into sales that were already decided.
